Makaphutu (Lily Number Two)
This orphanage is situated in the unbelievably beautiful Valley of a Thousand Hills. The scenery is breathtaking and yet from the children’s home one can see the mass graves of thousands of AIDS victims.

The facility was started by one woman going into this area of dire poverty and illness, simply to feed some children – hence Makaphutu (Zulu – ‘Mother of Food’) In spite of good people and very good intentions, this place is not yet the model village of Lily, and children there have suffered as a result of corruption and poor administration in the past.

Since taking over in July 2006, major improvements are already underway. The focus is on ‘de-institutionalizing’ and moving towards a home environment of love, care and nurturing, emotionally, physically and spiritually. As yet, there is very little government funding and thus there is a need to find sponsorship for each child as well as for general funding
