Lily of the Valley Children's Village
Lily is a unique facility situated in KwaZulu, South Africa
where one house mother lives with six children in a
wonderful little cottage. They receive good nutrition,
education, medication, nurturing and motherly care.

However ‘normal’ these children look, they all arrive at
Lily in desperate condition; abandoned, malnourished
and over 90% of them test HIV+ on arrival. The individual
case histories are tragic, but.............once at Lily, they find
hope and happiness along with their basic needs being
met. Their lives are filled with singing, dancing and
much love.

A nursery provides care for children through three years
of age to allow housemothers to attend to household
chores. There is a preschool on the premises, and the
older children attend local schools.

Miracles happen at Lily and many of the children who
tested HIV+ on arrival, test negative after a few years.
The % is far higher at Lily than the international rate for
this phenomenon.

This orphanage is situated in the unbelievably beautiful
Valley of a Thousand Hills.  The scenery is breathtaking
and yet from the children’s home one can see the mass
graves of thousands of AIDS victims.

The facility was started by one woman going into this
area of dire poverty and illness, simply to feed some
children – hence Makaphutu (Zulu – ‘Mother of Food’)  In
spite of good people and very good intentions, this
place is not yet the model village of Lily, and children
there have suffered as a result of corruption and poor
administration in the past.

Since taking over in July 2006, major improvements are
already underway.  The focus is on ‘de-institutionalizing’
and moving towards a home environment of love, care
and nurturing, emotionally, physically and spiritually.
As yet, there is very little government funding and thus
there is a need to find sponsorship for each child as
well as for general funding.

Transitional/Trade Village
Plans are underway for a ‘transitional’ village which will
include housing, trade schools and ongoing education
toward integration of the older children into the local
community.  The importance of a ‘stable’ local
community for the children, is one of the motivating
factors behind LoVE’s focus on Community Projects
(assisting in the development of local enterprise).
